114th Regiment

I took these photos last weekend, when, as always, I went
to the Memorial Day civil war reenactment.

This girl was my favorite reenactor to shoot.
I feel like she came straight out of a film or book, and someone needs to write her story.
From what I can tell, there were a small number of women that fought alongside the men,
mostly acting as cantinieres and they weren't disguised in men's clothes.

"Hers was the only face in the vicinity which seemed in any way gay. She was laughing and pointing very unconcernedly, as she stumbled over axes, spades and other obstacles, on her way through the trench! She was wonderfully courageous or else did not understand the danger . . . the shower of musket-balls, shrapnel, and every sort of projectile falling in the midst of us was trying to the nerves of our coolest."
(Frank Rauscher, Band Leader of the 114th PA on Marie Brose Tepe)

  2. Gorgeous photos, Blair. I love the sepia tones. Just the other day I was just remembering your Civil War reenactment photos from last year and here's a new set to view! :)

My mother was just given a few Civil War magazines from a friend. I can't wait to delve in.

  4. I actually portray one of these women. I'm a Confederate Cavalry Vivandiere for the Southwest Cavalry Brigade. If you would like, you can take a look at my blog to learn more.
